Brief
Design a gritty, atmospheric cover for a crime thriller set in modern Britain. The story follows a former Muay Thai fighter turned private investigator whose investigation spirals into a dangerous world of kidnapping, violence, crime, and personal redemption.
The client wanted a cover that captured the dark and suspenseful tone of the story, with creative direction left open to interpretation. Key visual elements suggested included a hole-in-the-wall viewpoint, silhouettes, a poker game, and a burning car.
Exploration

Developed the initial concept by combining the detective silhouette, keyhole, and poker chip into a cohesive composition. The angular typography and deep burgundy palette reinforce the thriller and noir atmosphere, while the asymmetrical layout creates visual balance across the full jacket.

Explored negative space through an open-door concept, using contrasting geometric shapes to guide the viewer toward the focal point. The design was developed into a full jacket wrap, with the hallway and lighting creating a visual connection between the front and back covers.

Developed a keyhole-inspired composition combining the door, number 13, and projected light into one visual. The mirrored shape continues across the jacket, creating a cohesive relationship between the front and back while reinforcing the story’s themes of mystery and discovery.

Developed a motel key tag concept inspired by the story’s setting, using it as the main visual element for “Room 13.” The key tag connects across the spine to a revolver silhouette on the back, creating continuity throughout the jacket. Bold blue and yellow reinforce the energetic action-thriller tone.
Final
The final concept combines the keyhole, door, number 13, and projected light into one cohesive visual across the full jacket. The back cover was refined to improve readability, balance, and space for the barcode and technical elements. The result is a clean, atmospheric design that maintains the dark thriller tone while remaining practical and print-ready.
