Problem

Problem

Cigarette butts are one of the most common forms of litter, yet most solutions rely on awareness alone and fail to influence behaviour at the moment of disposal.

Goal

Goal

The aim was to design a system that makes proper disposal easier and more appealing. It needed to be convenient, visible, and accessible, while encouraging behaviour change without relying solely on education or guilt.

Design Thinking

The “No More Butts” campaign combines character design with practical bin design to address cigarette littering in a more engaging way. Playful cigarette characters help humanise the issue and create a stronger emotional connection than a traditional warning. This idea carries through to the bin design, which takes the shape of a cigarette butt to make its purpose clear and intuitive. QR codes and transparent fill bars add a gamified element, turning proper disposal into a visible, community-driven effort.

No More Butts reframes cigarette waste as a shared responsibility and reusable resource. The project demonstrates how practical design and light incentives can support more circular everyday behaviour.

Small bins placed in high-traffic areas are supported by larger Station Hubs in locations such as universities, beaches and supermarkets, making disposal easier and more visible. An optional app allows users to scan a QR code to log disposal and collect points, while still allowing anonymous use. Points can be redeemed for recycled products or experience-based rewards, reinforcing the reuse cycle.

Designed to work alongside TerraCycle, the system ensures that collected cigarette waste is properly recycled while turning responsible disposal into a simple, repeatable habit.
